1   Short title

   This Act may be cited as the Republic of Nauru Act.

2   Interpretation

   In this Act-

   "commencement of this Act" means 31st January, 1968;

   "Minister" means the Minister responsible for external affairs;

   "Parliament" means the Parliament of Jamaica.

3   Operation of existing law

   (1) On and after the commencement of this Act, all existing law, that is to say all law which, whether being a rule of law or a provision of an Act of Parliament or of any other enactment or instrument whatsoever, is in force on the date of such commencement or has been passed or made before that date and comes into force thereafter, shall, unless and until provision to the contrary is made by Parliament or some other authority having power in that behalf, and subject to the following provisions of this section, have the same operation in relation to Nauru, and persons and things belonging to or connected with Nauru, as it would have apart from this subsection if Nauru had not become a Republic.

   (2) The Minister may, by order, make such adaptations in any enactment passed before or after the date of commencement of this Act, or in any instrument having effect under any such enactment, as appear to him necessary or expedient in consequence of the change of status of Nauru on that date; and any such order may, though made after the commencement of this Act, be made so as to have effect from the date of such commencement.

   (3) Every order made under subsection (2) shall be subject to negative resolution.
